"And if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday."
Isaiah 58:10
Most refugees and asylees come from countries and cultures that are very different from ours. Some refugees have lived in refugee camps for years; refugees coming to the United States from a refugee camp typically have been away from their home country for years. Youth and even teenage refugees may not remember a home beyond a refugee camp. In the refugee camps, there are food shortages and otherwise limited resources, and additional safety concerns. Refugees newly arriving in the United States are typically apprehensive and need someone who knows the local customs to help them adjust to their new life. We need mentors to introduce refugees and asylees to their new home - and refugees who have support from a mentor typically become self sufficient much more quickly than refugees who do not.
In addition, our clients frequently arrive in the United States with little more than one suitcase. Ecumenical Refugee and Immigration Services helps furnish and prepare apartments to provide them with an inviting home from the moment they arrive. We rely on donated furniture and goods to set up apartments. We have partnerships with other agencies and businesses to meet our needs - for example, many local hotels donate items such as pillows, towels, and comforters to our clients. For an updated list of items, please visit our donations page. We also greatly appreciate cash donations to allow us to meet pressing needs for hard to find items or other urgent expenses. Some examples include: wheelchairs for the elderly and disabled, Xcel bills, medical and/or dental bills, steel toed boots to start employment, bus passes to attend English classes, etc. You can send a check to 1600 Downing St. Suite 400 Denver, CO 80128 or you can donate via Paypal HERE. Please contact [email protected] for a tax deductible receipt.
Want to donate your time but aren't ready to commit to one family? Church sponsorships, internships, and agency volunteer assignments might be a better fit for you!
